Garkon – Aryan Valley

Garkon is one of the few villages inhabiting a population that considers itself to be a part of the historic Aryan race. Situated at a distance of around 160 km from Leh, it lies on the primary Khaltse-Batalik-Kargil route. As a local belief, that Galo-Milo-Dilo, three brothers from Gilgit migrated towards this region and Galo settled in Garkon. The greenery, the quaint atmosphere and the sound of the streams running through the village grab your attention as soon as you enter the village. The statue of deity Vajrapani, the protector, local heritage museum preserving Aryan culture and a hidden waterfall are the highlights of Garkon.

The only house that is open to guests, the homestay is one of the significant houses in the village. After a small hike from the main road traversing through beautiful fields, the house reveals itself surrounded with the beauty of the village. The homestay was opened by Tashi Lundup with an aim to preserve the endangered Aryan culture. The homestay is situated right next to the local heritage museum which has a collection of various tools, dresses and other equipments used by Aryan people. The house has 5 rooms in total; all with a double bed but can be extend to multiple occupancy.

Diskit manages the kitchen where the guests will be treated with various local delicacies fresh from the farm and completely organic. She can cook authentic Ladakhi dishes like Skyu, Thukpa, Chutagi, Momos etc. Many other dishes can also be prepared on request.

Know your Host

Tashi Lundup along with his wife Diskit Zomkar will welcome as your host. Tashi is a very passionate person who has dedicated his life to save the dying Aryan culture of Ladakh. He is a teacher by profession. And also works as a member of the Preservation of Aryan Culture Society that talks about Aryan heritage and local folk songs. Tashi is quite renowned in the region for his work and often travels across different areas to speak about the importance of preservence and importance of the endangered Aryan culture.
