Sitting on a cliff above the mighty Zanskar, Tsogsti is one of the remotest village of Ladakh with just 4 households. Its located 31 km from Leh and 4 km from Indus-Zanskar river confluence. Tsogsti is a true eco-village running completely on solar power with no mobile towers or network around. So if you have a plan to get lost in nature for a digital detox, this is the place to be in. Earlier people had to cross from one side of the river to the other through a cable trolley. But recently its connected to the main road by a one kilometer long unmetalled road. The village initially had only a single house. Slowly the family got extended and build another 3 houses. There is a little monastery built above the village where one can peacefully meditate away from any human interaction. Tsogsti also is the base to the Zanskar river rafting. The river below gets frozen during the winters and becomes the route for the renowned Chadar Trek.
One of the most unique homestay experience you can get here. You get to stay and eat in each of the houses based on the duration of your trip. It is a collective homestay system that have adopted in order to negate any unequal number of guests visits so that every house get fair share of income. The sense of togetherness and unity is marvelous among the four households where each festival, every occasion is celebrated with brotherhood. All the four houses vary from each other in terms of size and construction. Be prepared to eat your meals and spend your nights in different rooms and houses interacting with new people each day. Since its an eco village, they still use traditional Ladakhi toilets.
