The capital city of Sikkim, Gangtok is located on a ridge in the southeast-central part of the state at an altitude of 5500 ft. There are many vantage points in Gangtok that provide spectacular views of Mt Khangchendzonga. In December, the annual Gangtok Food and Culture festival is held in Gangtok to showcase Sikkim’s multi-cultural cuisine, music and dance performances. It is a peaceful place with a mix of different cultures. While lepchas are the original inhabitants, there are a significant number of Nepalese and Bhutias.
Built in 1930 by Late Sherap Lepcha, the great grandfather of the current owner, the bungalow still stands in its original traditional architecture. It is built out of timber logs and walls made of bamboo and mud. Interestingly, there are no nails or binders in the entire building, it stands using the force of gravity. Sherap Lepcha was the ‘Mukhtiyar’ in the king’s court. In the feudal administrative hierarchy of Sikkim, the Mukhtiyars enjoyed a position next to the Kazi/Thikadars. Their duty was akin to today’s District Magistrate. The bungalow has been immaculately maintained by the Dorjee family.
Located minutes away from the Royal Palace, at the prestigious residential locality of Gangtok, it is the perfect getaway from the din of city life. You can enjoy great views of the Himalayas while sitting in the lawn, sipping a cuppa. There are two double occupancy rooms and two single occupancy rooms. There are 2 common bathrooms with all modern fittings.
