Likir Homestay – Sham Valley

Likir is a serene and peaceful village around 52 kms from Leh. People here are very friendly and helpful. Each house in the village is located a few hundred meters away from each other, space out by beautiful barley fields, streams and pathways. In summers you could see the villagers indulged in farm work. As you walk through the village, you will come across kids playing on streets, different kinds of birds, sheep, cows, dzos, stupas and glittering glacial streams watering the fields. Likir is also home to a traditional Ladakhi pottery, a technique still being practiced & nurtured by our lovely neighbor. The host would be happy to give you a tour to their studio & shop during your stay here. You can do an hour hike uphill into the rocky mountains and visit a meditation house built around a small natural spring or walk downhill to the main stream. You might even spot a marmot if you are lucky. Old Likir is surrounded by farmlands and little streams during summers. This is one of the best stays to experience Ladakhi lifestyle.

Located just a few minutes downhill from the historical Likir Monastery, this is a simple yet thoughtfully built homestay. Stanzin, the host has himself built this homestay with local materials like soil, clay, wood and stone. It is designed to keep you warm and comfortable at anytime of the year. Homestay has total 4 guest rooms; 1 single room and one double room with a shared toilet, and 2 rooms come with an attached toilet . The rooms give you a mesmerizing view of the valley and the Ladakh Himalayan range. The rooftop and the terrace garden is a good place to warm yourself with some chai and stunning views of the valley & the Monastery. You can also enjoy crunchy apricots fresh from the garden during September.

The colors of landscape and the everyday activities change with season. The village depends on its melting glaciers to grow its food. It turns into a lush green oasis hustling with life during summer and slows down for the winters. Our unique culture and traditional knowledge helps us grow as much as we can during this short span on time and spend the winters on art & craft. Everything that comes from the land, goes back to the land. Every little resource is valued.

Food

Tsomo looks after the kitchen mostly while Stanzin also cooks occasionally. Almost all the ingredients that are used are fresh from their own farm. Food can be made on demand ranging from local cuisine that involves items like Momos, Chutaghi, Skyu, Thukpa, Thentuk etc. to other Indian cuisines. Make sure you sip on to the local morning tea made out of fresh grown mint.

Know your Host

Stanzin is a young lively person who manages the homestay along with his wife Tsemo. They are always home or in the field around. One of them might occasionally step out to Leh town to buy essentials. In that case, you can approach whoever is home if you need something. Stanzing spent his early childhood studying in Taiwan from where he picked up his interest in Hiking and mountaineering. Hence apart from managing the property and looking after his farm, Stanzin also doubles as a Trek guide who has traversed across almost all the treks in Ladakh ranging from Stok Kangri to Markha Valley to his own trekking routes. He will be more than happy to share stories with you and have conversations over a cup of chai or dinner.
