Vibrant streets with cool cafes and graffiti, old buildings with flowers on every porch and cool cafes greet you as you enter this charming little town in Kerala. The first European township in India, Fort Kochi has layers of historical and cultural connections and that can be felt here. The lucrative spice trade bought Chinese and Arabian traders to Kerala shores and then later the Portuguese, Dutch and British and so Fort kochi became a cultural melting pot. Fort Kochi today has perfect fusion of European, Jewish and Indian cultures. Temples, Churches, Agraharams, Mosques and a Synagogue co-exist in the area, along with the buildings of the colonial era, pointing to a vibrant past and a harmonious present.
Odatha residential area is located near the Veli ground at Fort Kochi. In the 17th century, during the Dutch rule in Kochi, a botanical garden was established in this area and it is likely that this was the first botanical garden in India. There is nothing remaining of the garden except for a pillar and a portion of another one which once stood on either sides of the garden gate but locals say that even to this day, in some parts of Odatha, one can find rare medicinal plants.
